Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is the most mature wireless connectivity technology for smart home IoT applications. The IoT market is currently transitioning from Wi-Fi 4 single-band (2.4GHz) to Wi-Fi 6 dual-band (2.4GHz + 5GHz) — driven by multi-device concurrency efficiency, low power consumption, and cleaner spectrum environments.
Product Characteristics
OFDMA: Efficient Multi-Device Connectivity
Wi-Fi 6 introduces Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), which divides a wireless channel into multiple Resource Units (RUs). This enables the access point to communicate with multiple low-bandwidth IoT devices simultaneously within a single transmission, eliminating the channel contention common in Wi-Fi 4. In smart homes with 10–30 connected devices, OFDMA significantly improves network efficiency, reduces latency, and delivers a smoother, more responsive user experience.
Target Wake Time (TWT)
With Target Wake Time (TWT), IoT devices wake only at scheduled intervals to transmit or receive data, remaining in sleep mode the rest of the time. Compared with previous Wi-Fi generations, this can reduce power consumption by over 70% in typical IoT applications, extending battery life from weeks to months—or even up to a year, depending on the device and usage scenario. As a result, Wi-Fi 6 is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to Zigbee and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for battery-powered IoT devices.
Dual-Band Flexibility
Wi-Fi 6 supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, allowing IoT devices to operate on the most suitable frequency for different deployment scenarios. The 2.4 GHz band provides wider coverage and better wall penetration, while the 5 GHz band offers higher bandwidth, lower interference, and a less congested spectrum. Together, dual-band connectivity delivers an optimal balance of coverage, reliability, and network performance.
WPA3: Enhanced Security
Wi-Fi 6 supports WPA3, replacing WPA2's pre-shared key (PSK) authentication with Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE) to defend against offline dictionary and brute-force attacks. WPA3 also supports Forward Secrecy, ensuring that previously transmitted data remains protected even if authentication credentials are later compromised. This provides stronger privacy protection for today's increasingly connected smart home IoT devices.
Gateway-Free Connectivity
Wi-Fi devices connect directly to the home router, eliminating the need for additional gateways or hubs. Unlike Zigbee and Thread ecosystems that typically require dedicated gateways or border routers, Wi-Fi enables simpler installation, lower system complexity, and a more seamless smart home experience for consumers.
Smart Lighting
Smart bulbs, LED strips, and switch panels require only low-bandwidth connectivity, which can be supported by Wi-Fi 4. Wi-Fi 6 enhances reliability by utilizing the less congested 5 GHz band, reducing interference in increasingly connected smart homes.
Smart Furniture
Smart furniture, such as height-adjustable desks, electric sofas, smart beds, and motorized curtains, benefits from direct Wi-Fi connectivity for convenient control and management. Since these devices mainly handle status updates and control commands, they require limited bandwidth but rely heavily on stable, reliable wireless connections.
Smart Security
Smart locks, video doorbells, and door/window sensors require reliable and responsive connectivity. Wi-Fi 6 enhances performance in multi-device environments through OFDMA technology, while the strong coverage and wall penetration of the 2.4 GHz band make Wi-Fi an ideal choice for smart security devices deployed throughout the home.
Low-Power IP Cameras
Battery-powered IP cameras, such as video doorbells, security cameras, and baby monitors, benefit from Wi-Fi 6 TWT technology, which enables longer standby time through scheduled wake-up cycles while supporting high-definition video transmission when needed. This makes Wi-Fi a more practical choice for next-generation low-power smart security devices.
