Overview
Matter
Matter is a unified smart home application-layer standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). Rather than introducing a new wireless protocol, Matter defines a common language that enables smart home devices to work together seamlessly. Regardless of whether devices use Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet as the underlying connectivity technology, Matter enables interoperable experiences across major smart home ecosystems, including Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.

Cross-Brand Interoperability
Matter enables smart home devices from different brands to work together seamlessly across ecosystems. Whether devices use Wi-Fi or Thread for connectivity, they communicate through a unified application layer with standardized data models and clusters. By breaking down ecosystem barriers, Matter allows users to build flexible smart home systems with products from different manufacturers.
Multi-Admin Support
A single Matter device can be commissioned into multiple smart home ecosystems, such as Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa, with each ecosystem maintaining its own independent Fabric. This allows different users to control the same device from their preferred platforms without affecting the overall smart home configuration, delivering a more flexible and user-friendly multi-user experience.
Local-First Communication
Matter enables local IPv6-based communication between devices, allowing commands to be processed within the local network without relying on cloud services. Even during Internet outages, connected Matter devices can continue to respond locally. This local-first approach improves privacy, reduces latency, and enhances the reliability of smart home experiences.
Secure Device Authentication with DAC
Matter ensures trusted device identity through a unique Device Attestation Certificate (DAC) provisioned during manufacturing. The PAA–PAI–DAC certificate chain, combined with PASE commissioning, CASE secure communication,and AES-128-CCM encryption, provides strong protection against device cloning and supply-chain attacks.
QR Code-Based Commissioning
Matter simplifies device setup with a unified commissioning process. Users can scan a device QR code to add products to their preferred smart home ecosystem, eliminating complex configuration steps. During commissioning, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) can assist in securely transferring network credentials, reducing setup complexity and delivering a faster, more seamless onboarding experience.
Cross-Platform Smart Home
A Matter-enabled smart bulb can be controlled and automated across major ecosystems, including Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Matter reduces ecosystem barriers, giving users greater flexibility to build smart homes with products from different platforms.
Smart Security
Smart locks, door sensors, and presence sensors can achieve cross-app interaction and automation through the Matter standard. Scenarios such as unlocking doors to trigger lighting, or sensor alerts activating cameras, can be easily created. Local communication helps protect user privacy while ensuring faster response and more reliable operation.
Whole-Home Energy Management
Matter enables smart plugs, energy monitors, and solar inverters to work together through a unified standard. By connecting devices across brands and enabling seamless data exchange and automation, Matter helps deliver whole-home energy visibility and intelligent energy management.
Legacy Device Bridging
Through Matter bridges, existing Zigbee and Z-Wave devices can be integrated into the Matter ecosystem, enabling a gradual migration path without requiring users to replace all existing devices at once.
