How to Choose the Right Radar Frequency Band?5.8 GHz / 24 GHz / 60 GHz — Explained in One Read

Author: EARDATEK

A radar's operating band defines what it can "see." The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength, and the finer the detail it picks up — from detecting motion, to recognizing human presence, to capturing breathing and heartbeat. But choosing a band isn't about picking the "highest" — it's about matching the band to the use case.

Core differences between the three radar bands

5.8 GHz radar — Motion detection

A wavelength of about 5.17 cm, designed for moving targets: when someone walks past in a hallway, the radar outputs a high-level trigger; when the person leaves, the signal goes away. Strong cost-performance, excellent interference immunity, and stable long-term operation.

Typical applications

- Hallway / garage motion-activated lights

- Mid- to high-bay fixtures in warehouses and factories (6–15 m mounting height)

24 GHz radar — Presence detection and localization

A wavelength of about 12.5 mm — sensitive enough to pick up the tiny chest-wall displacement caused by breathing, so a person can still be detected while sitting completely still.

The same band also supports centimeter-level ranging, enabling real-time localization and trajectory tracking within the detection zone.

Typical applications

- Smart toilet auto lid open/close, urine detection

- Display-controlled products (TVs and other consumer electronics)

- Battery-powered and compact devices (current as low as 20 µA, footprint 12 × 8 mm)

- Smart appliances (follow-me airflow, avoid-blow mode, person tracking)

60 GHz radar — Vital signs and 3D spatial awareness

A wavelength of about 5 mm — sensitive enough to capture the millimeter-scale micro-movements caused by breathing and heartbeat, and measure respiration and heart rate within ±5 bpm, with no wearable required on the user.

The band also supports posture recognition and fall detection, making it well suited to use cases where accuracy and privacy both matter.

Typical applications

- Smart doorbells, smart security, dual-tech sensors (high-accuracy, low-false-trigger human presence)

- Sleep lamps, sleep speakers (breathing, heart rate, body movement, sleep stage monitoring)

- Wellness and elder-care sensors (posture recognition + fall detection)

Selection guidance

- Detect motion only — no need to keep detecting while a target stays still — 5.8 GHz radar is the best balance of cost and performance.

- Most smart-home scenarios (human presence detection, ranging, trajectory tracking) are well covered by 24 GHz mmWave radar.

- Higher accuracy, lower false-trigger rate, finer vital-sign sensing and spatial awareness — 60 GHz mmWave radar is the better fit.
